The name J-Essential may not be synonymous with the greats of hip-hop, but one listen to his innovative approach to the classic sound that changed the landscape of rap back in the early to mid-nineties and it becomes clear that he has what it takes to make his name known in the game. J-Essential started emceeing at an early age, and began to record with his right-hand-man, producer Decap at the age of 15. Since then J-Essential has managed to accumulate three independently released full-length albums, along with a wide range of various other tracks and projects.
His first album entitled “To The Fullest” featured a young and hungry emcee with a unique poetic ability to tell a story and paint a beautiful hip-hop picture. Taking the local acclaim and status he was able to build from his first project, J-Essential approached his college years with two things in mind: receive the right education and in turn, educate the hip-hop world with another soon-to-be classic.
The album that followed was entitled “Full Capacity.” This sixteen track full length showcased J-Essential’s growth and maturity, combined with a new found experience and knowledge with regards to making a clean and complete album with producers Decap and J.Chop.
Though there was not one other featured emcee throughout the album, DJ/Producer Tyler Deane was able to contribute to the album as well, which lead to J-Essential’s third full length album entitled “Speaker Medicine.” This exclusive raw project was J-Essential’s way to pay homage to the old-school sound that truly defined his voice and advancement in today’s over-saturated commercial sound of hip-hop music.
With nearly a decade’s worth of experience, J-Essential is now ready to take his music and entourage to the next level. One would be hard pressed to disagree, and as today’s hip-hop music continues to relentlessly attempt to define itself there is something to be said for a genuine sound that is solely built on the love and appreciation of the artform itself. That one listen will make it clear why J-Essential is here to stay.
